I really like the idea of SROI as a developmental tool rather than just as an end-product to demonstrate value. And the magic spreadsheet looks very useful indeed!

Hi Colin - I don't think you're whingeing and I'm sorry you've had trouble reading the page. I know less than nothing about what to do so will pass your comments on to our web person and hope he can fix it, if not now, later.
Cheers

Food for thought, (at least the bits I could make out easily). I am color blind (protanopia to be exact). I mostly use Safari browser (not sure if that is important), and quite a lot of this web page is tricky for me to make out. I don't wish to whinge, and I know it is my problem really, nonetheless it would be great if you could bear in mind us color challenged types when undertaking the next webpage re-working.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!

mmm! I missed this comment earlier as I've been so busy paying the rent. How about asking ourselves what would happen if we stopped thinking of stuff that goes on outside of the mainstream as marginal? Maybe marginal is just a way of saying its time hasn't yet come. After all, when I left uni in goodness - 1970, women were marginal and every time I opened my mouth in a meeting I was marginal.

For marginal read front line! What Eccentric City is celebrating is the courage to make it differently which often means being out there on your own. OK, some of it is self indulgence, but where my self indulgence joins yours and someone elses is maybe where we have put our finger on a human need. Besides, we need to nourish our souls, and as someone who has spent a lot of time engaging with 'reality' (the mainstream) it does leave your soul hungry!

This is all very well and I can pay the rent, but artists ultimately want to communicate and, in my media, that is a live experience only. There is, in my view, absolutely nothing "peculiar" in what I do. Words like 'eccentric' and 'peculiar' are inadequate, almost self-deprecating attempts to articulate an alternative view. I do not accept this self-marginalisation that consciously dis-engages itself from 'reality'; that is to say the dominant view. Counter culture of this nature serves only as a safety valve. By performing for free and then taking a collection I merely posit a method of engaging in the economic sphere in Edinburgh wiith more savvy. Alternatives must be presented as such within mainstream debate / activity not outside it. Lets take Red Umbrella and Star and Shadow. What's the betting that in 20 / 25 years time the S & S activists of today will be in just the same kind of conventional mainstream activities as the stalwarts of R.U? They will of course, like R.U. veterans, have experienced creative forms and activities which will inform their attitudes to their postions; but they will similarly be unable to impement actions as they might wish because they have to pay the rent. To conclude: I am questioning the self-indulgence of the margins.
